BAND

The heart of Delta Rhythm Jazz Band is a quartet of hard-working musicians from the Cambridge jazz scene.  The band can be expanded to suit all events, for example by including a full drum kit or an expanded horn section - please get in touch for more details.

The regular line-up is as follows:

MIKE DENMAN - SAX

Mike grew up in Cambridge and took up Saxophone and Guitar at secondary school, studying music up to A level. At age 18 he moved up north to study Jazz at Leeds College of Music, graduating with honours three years later. Currently based in Cambridge, Mike gigs frequently with a number of groups in a variety of genres, with notable recent performances including the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend and Boardmasters Festival. When not onstage, Mike offers instrumental tuition. You can follow Mike on twitter at @mdmusic_uk

PETE HILL - BASS

Pete has been playing electric and upright basses in bands in and around Cambridge for more than thirty years. He learnt piano as a child but it wasn’t until he bought his first bass guitar in his teens and joined a rock band that he really got what it was all about. Since then he has played everything from metal to R&B, reggae to big band. These days Pete mostly plays jazz with a number of small groups locally and teaches bass.

TOM NYGREN - GUITAR, VOCALS

Tom's musical career started at the age of four, when he discovered that his dad's guitar case could be used as a makeshift pirate ship. He took up the cello at the age of seven and switched to electric guitar five years later. Over the years he's dabbled with Canto Lirico, Naepolitan folk and Irish music. When he still had a convincing amount of hair, he played lead guitar in rock and heavy metal outfits. In the late 90s, Tom lived in in South America. Whilst in Brazil, Tom was bitten by the Bossa Nova bug and has been hooked on Brazilian music ever since.

GIOVANI TRAVEZ - PERCUSSION

Giovani was born in Washington, DC. Raised by South and Central American parents, he was greatly influenced by Latin/Afro Cuban rhythms. Surrounded by a musical family, Giovani started playing drums as a toddler.  He has played with several bands in many different countries, covering a range of genres as diverse as rock, Latin jazz, folk, country, caribbean rhythms and many others. Giovani's main instrument are the congas, but he's equally at ease with drum set, timbales, djembes, doumbeks, and others.

SAMPLE TUNES

REPERTOIRE

Our repertoire can be performed instrumentally or with original language lyrics (usually English/Spanish/Brazilian Portuguese), depending the nature of the event.  In general, we feel that singing is more suitable for parties and celebrations, whilst instrumentals work better at formal dinners and conferences where music serves to create a sophisticated ambience.

Any special requests for songs can typically be added at 3-4 days' notice.

Our standard set list covers most traditional jazz and latin songs, with tunes such as:
Besame Mucho (Velázquez)
Chega de Saudade (Jobim)
Invitation (Kaper)
Cheese Cake (Gordon)
Manhã De Carneval (Bonfá)
Nica’s Dream (Silver)
Stolen Moments (Nelson)
Summer Samba (Valle)
That’s Amore (Warren)
Wave (Jobim)

CONTACT AND BOOKINGS

Delta Rhythm are the perfect accompaniment to any occasion for a classy,
relaxed atmosphere. If you are looking for a sophisticated touch to your
wedding, cocktail party, conference or event, please get in touch!

Because our standard line-up includes percussion instead of a full drum kit,
the volume levels are much tamer than a "traditional" jazz band.
We can however expand the line-up to suit your requirements if you
are looking for a bigger band!

A typical booking for the band would be 2 x 45-60 minute sets
but this can be extended or shortened depending on your wishes.

Thank you! Your submission has been received!
